February’s Youth Advisory Council meeting was “Bring a Friend Day”.
Members were invited to bring a current or incoming freshman that they thought might be interested in and a good fit for YAC. Eight friends attended including one current 8th grader.
YAC is comprised of high school students that can come from any high school in the county, but 9th grade students are preferred to allow for a full four years of impact and investment.
The friends of Yackers learned about the grant making process, what YAC is and what it does. They were also able to observe YAC members reviewing and voting on several grants..
Grants from YAC so far this year are:
- $16,058 to Difference Maker’s After School Program
- $5,000 to The Industry’s Bridge Program
- $7,000 to the Port Huron Police Department’s 2019 High School Youth Academy
- $2,454 to Marine City High School for Charging Carts
The event was an effort to raise awareness and draw in potential future candidates. Of the eight visitors, two would like to join YAC next year.
