The SC4 Foundation has a rich history of providing scholarships to students from all walks of life and from all communities in our region.
In 2019 alone, the SC4 Foundation provided over $100,000 to deserving students. Each year, students can apply for awards from more than 50 scholarship funds at SC4 Foundation.
The Janet S. Albrecht-Hillaker Memorial Scholarship is a new fund recently established by Dick Hillaker in honor and memory of his late wife, Janet. This scholarship will support future teachers since teaching young children was Janet’s life mission.
“SC4 Foundation is here to help donors like Mr. Hillaker with how they want to support SC4 and their students,” said Harold Burns, SC4 Foundation Chair. “It’s our honor to carry on Janet’s love for education as her legacy.”
Extending far beyond teaching, Janet was a mentor to many young, as well as experienced, teachers. “She was an ‘illuminator’ – providing students with not only interesting lessons, but with a vision that they could grow up to be whomever they desired to be,” said husband Dick.
Early childhood teachers have the important responsibility of shaping the lives of young, impressionable children. Janet took this challenge personally. She ensured that each child in her Kindergarten class experienced and realized success.
Janet was enthusiastic and passionate about teaching, and the children felt her energy, effort and emotion. She loved children and strived to successfully prepare them for their future. Janet was a caring and compassionate Kindergarten teacher for over 30 years in the Port Huron Area Schools, as well as a member of the M.E.A., the American Association of University Women, and the Port Huron Education Association.
The Janet S. Albrecht-Hillaker Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to Port Huron High or Port Huron Northern graduates with a 3.0 GPA, attending SC4 full time with a preference for those entering the education field. Importantly, students can renew this scholarship every year they attend SC4, as long as they remain in good standing.
St. Clair County Community College has improved the lives of thousands of students and positively impacted southeast Michigan and far beyond for more than 95 years. Since its founding in 1963, the SC4 Foundation has played a key role in that success, contributing hundreds of thousands of dollars to students and the college, enhancing the learning experience for all students.
