The Blue Water Arts Committee (BWAC) is proud to welcome its newest — and youngest — members, Claire Marquardt and Claire Voss. The students bring a unique perspective to the committee, which intentionally seeks to include youth voices.
“The student’s input is a true asset to the committee as their feedback helps us invest in initiatives that engage people of all ages,” said Tom Walker, chair of the BWAC. “Having a youth’s perspective ensures we are working toward our goal to preserve and grow philanthropy as it relates to music and the arts.”
Marquardt and Voss are high school students in the Port Huron Area School District and are both interested and involved in activities related to music and the arts.
Marquardt is a senior at Port Huron Northern High School (PHN) and is involved with her school’s marching band, choir and jazz band. She participates in various sports, clubs and committees and plays the guitar as well as the French horn.
“Claire is an astute student who honestly cares about others,” said Michelle Zyrowski, English and language arts teacher at PHN. “Her talented work in the drama program and promotion of positive behaviors positions her as a valued leader in our community.”
Also joining the committee is Voss, a sophomore at Port Huron High School (PHHS) where she is involved with Student Council and is active with the Drama Club. Outside of school, Voss enjoys singing, playing the piano and the guitar, and also working at the Riverbank Theatre in Marine City.
“Claire Voss has stood out as a student from the time she started at Port Huron High,” said Principal Michael Palmer. “Along with being a stellar student, she is heavily involved in extracurriculars such as Student Council and the Drama Club. Most importantly she is a kind person, always willing to help out her school and students at any time.”
The BWAC promotes community art by supporting programs and initiatives within the Blue Water Area such as the Music Mentor series and the Making Muralists project. We appreciate the support of the Charles & Margaret Anderson Foundation Endowment and the Mickey & Agnes Knowlton Fund who share our vision of engaging youth and preserving music and the arts for all to enjoy.
